First Day of School

I've got a photograph
We're holding hands
Standing on the front porch step
My legs were skinny then
We were just little girls
I older than you
Out to test the unkown world
It was our
first day of school

Didn't study world concerns
At that wide-eyed age
Cared if boys looked up our skirts
And winning games we played
I taught you how to read
From my Dick & Jane books
You looked up to me
Just like
our first day of school

Grew tall as time went on
Still short in common sense
Found out that drugs were not
Pink bottles in our medicine chest
We thought that we were wise
The world was ours to rule
Lessons on how to add up life
Every day
a first day of school

We're both grown up now
You've got your own little girl
Far away in different towns
We phone once in a while
Worry if our bills get paid
Or which direction to choose
Always learn something new everyday
Life is like
the first day of school
